Earlier this week he accidentally broke the screen on his Macbook Pro. He took it to the Apple store and they told him it would cost $1,240 to repair the screen. This more than we can afford. Can you recommend another service center that might be able to repair the screen for less? Howdy... I was hoping we had a longer list here: http://applerock.org/Repair.html but it's pretty meager. Check the different places out, but I think Larry Parker's shop has moved so be sure to ask. One who ISN'T on that list is Bill 'Jag' Jagitsch. His web site is http://jagshouse.com/ and I believe he is Apple-certified, too. Of course, depending upon exactly what broke, the price could still be pretty high. Apple keeps the parts under strict control so some things still cost a lot. There are several computer repair places here in Conway but I don't believe any of them work on Macs. You might ask them at Computer Works http://www.tcworks.net/ or Luyet Computer Co. http://www.luyet.info/ ... and there are probably others. When I work on my own Macs, I use the info at iFixit and buy the parts there or wherever I can (see the links at AppleRock, above). Whatever you come up with, please report back; we always need recommendations for good repair places. [If anyone reading this can recommend another good repair place, please write Bobby Duncan and copy AppleRock at news007 at applerock.org so we can add it to our web site.] ---------------------------------------------------- HELP: App Developer Wanted on 01/31/2012 at 01:32 PM John Halloran wrote: > Looking to hire an app developer. Apple sold more iPhones and iPads in 2011 alone than all the Macs the company ever made. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/02/17/apple_ios_v_mac_sales/ Apple sold more iOS devices in 2011 than the total number of Macs sold in all 28 years since the original Macintosh 128k first hit store shelves in late January 1984. "The iOS platform as a whole reached 316 million cumulative units at the end of last year," Horace Dediu writes on his Asymco blog . "The iOS platform overtook the OS X platform in under four years and more iOS devices were sold in 2011 (156 million) than all the Macs ever sold (122 million)." ---------------------------------------------------- InfoManager ---------------------------------------------- by Lynn Wegley, InfoManager, with coeditor Fred Showker What's Here: 01 Beware of 'Sextortion' 02 Edit, Code, Color apps 03 Book Excerpt: Cyber Stalking, Fraud, and Abuse 04 4 Tips for iBook Authors 05 Dragons Rage 2 06 The Evolution of Mac OS 07 Modern security not enough 08 Track Your iPhone or Locate Family 09 Default Folder X 10 Viewfinder Effect for FCP X 11 Dig it! Here is one of the "typical" reports you may have seen: http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/04/14/apples-flashback-fixes-three-belts-and-a-pair-of-suspenders/ > ...a piece of malware known as theFlashback trojan > -- > a patch for which has been available since February -- caught Apple > with its pants down. Install Apple Security Updates to Eliminate Flashback, experts say http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2012/04/flashback-waning-but-still-infecting-about-140000-macs.ars It seems likely that those still infected with Flashback are the same users who don't update their software regularly, and probably don't keep abreast of the latest tech news. If you have Mac-using friends that might fall into that category, encourage them to run Software Update regularly.
